The Spring 2014 Runway Report from Ken Downing

Your Bravern bloggers had the opportunity to dress up for the Spring 2014 Runway Report, curated by none other than the Neiman Marcus fashion director himself, Ken Downing. The style icon shared the hottest spring tips and trends and yes, he’s just as charming as he looks. Mr. Downing also gave us a little pre-fall sneak peek. Trends to watch include:

  • Western-inspired jackets are the new biker jacket (though biker jackets will always be chic!)

  • Low hem lines – don’t be afraid to go past the knee

  • Two-piece ensembles – pair a coat with a matching skirt, or even pants under a dress with the same fabric

  • Knitwear for evenings – slip a knit sweater or sweatshirt over a dress

  • Lots of colorful and/or chunky jewelry – from chin to chest, costume to real deal

  • Dress down evening attire with casual ankle boots

  • Embrace the global traveler within you by wearing feathers in your hair

  • Mix digital prints featuring artistic influence from O’Keefe, Picasso and Pollock

  • Fringe, fringe, fringe!
  • And of course, pair black and white for a timeless duo

Take a look at some of the well-composed ensembles by Ken:

We’ll never forget some of Ken’s to-the-point words of wisdom, including, “If your significant other tells you that you’re wearing too much jewelry, find a new date!” and “If you’re not going to wear fringe this season, don’t even leave the house!” For a full recap and photos of the Spring 2014 Runway Report, visit our friend Rebecca Klein’s Eastside Fashion blog.

Top Five Pre-Fall Fashion Trends

The sun is shining and summer fashion is in full-swing, but many Pacific Northwest natives look forward to the familiar – the layered looks and cozy compilations that are worn the other ten months of the year. Whether going back to school, back to work, or back to reality, fall marks a fresh start on many of our calendars. To get us in the mood, our friends at Harper’s Bazaar spilled a pre-fall 2013 fashion preview with looks from Alexander McQueen, Versace, Balmain and others.

Here are the top five trends we’ve spotted:

This fall, tops, jackets and blazers will be cropped like crazy. Expect to see dark, dramatic color palettes overlapping with each other.

Bracelets, belts, earrings – you name it – supersize it! Transform a simple ensemble into a bold look with the addition of a chunky necklace, big bangle bracelet or long, dangly earrings.

Button up ladies! The androgynous look is still alive and well. Whether it’s a buttoned collar paired with a sweater or a modest dress neckline, the choice is to cover up!

Can’t choose between lace, mesh and leather? Why try! The more the merrier. Designers are inviting every fabric join the party.

Here are some of the designers perfecting these looks this fall:

Color Inspiration from lafayette 148

"Since Africa, my sense of color has not been the same after seeing how Mother Nature made grass such a lush green and the sky a sensual blue. I was so overwhelmed that I wanted to bottle it and bring it back home with me instead, I have photographs." - Edward Wilkerson

Look Great and Feel Great in 2012

So many people set New Year’s resolutions about fitness and diet, but what it really comes down to is we all want to feel better (especially after the excess of the holidays). Part of feeling better is looking better, right? We put together a couple ways you can help yourself feel and look better this year!

If working out is one of your resolutions, head to David Barton Gym. The equipment is great. The atmosphere is awesome (including flattering lighting ladies). The classes will kick your you-know-what. And they have $0 enrollment in January.

If you already have the fitness locked down and are looking for relaxation or rejuvenation (the resolution of taking more time for yourself maybe?), check out Red Door Spa. They have series packages with great savings (example: purchase 10 services, get 2 free). Manicures, pedicures, massage, hair, waxing – you name it, they’ve got you covered.

Hope these tips help you feel better this year. Here’s to a great 2012!
